This shore-based theory course is aimed at the more experienced sailor or motor cruiser building upon the knowledge gained in the Day Skipper course. Many of the topics are similar, but explore subjects in greater depth. Essential knowledge for everyone considering taking the practical RYA Yachtmaster course.
The subjects covered will include: Passage Planning; Identification of Lights and Shapes; Coastal Navigation; Meteorology and Pilotage. At Bisham Abbey we run the RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster course over SIX days either taken over three weekends or intensively over six consecutive days. Course numbers are small and often we will have two instructors to the group.
The RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore course pack is included in the fee. Over recent years we have developed a variety of teaching aids to enable us to make your theory course as interesting as possible. A range of books is also available for you to peruse and purchase at the School during your course if you wish.
All you need to bring for the Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore course is a pair of dividers and a Portland type plotter. We do not provide these but can order them for you, if you wish, for the start of the course. You will also need to complete and obtain a VHF Radiotelephony (SRC) Licence which, of course, we can help you with.
Hours daily are 0900 - 1700hrs.
A light lunch can be purchased within the main centre or bring your own. Hot drinks are available from our coin operated vending machine.
